Plein Air on a Michigan Winter Day

This painting is on its way to Atlanta with its new owners as a reminder of home to the happy young couple that has moved away. I painted the piece while sitting on her family farm on a cold blustery winter day. Although no snow was on the ground I love the winter sky. These Midwest colors are hard to find in the sunny South and are sure to be a pleasant reminder of home on some of those homesick days that are bound to come.

Who new stretching paper could be so difficult!

During my first attempt, I stretched four pieces of heavy weight watercolor paper for the illustrations I am working on. I followed the directions I found on line and went to town- this morning I went down to my studio excited to paint them and.... they had lifted- all four lifted in different places. So, instead of painting, today I re stretched and am hopeful that tomorrow I will be painting!

National Make a Blanket Day

So... anyone make a blanket on Saturday? If so you were not alone! All over the USA people were making a blanket for the organization Project Linus. This is an incredible organization and if you have not heard of it before I strongly recommend checking them out- www.projectlinus.org.

In Allendale, I organized a Girl Scout Make a Blanket Day. Girls worked with the Kent-Ottawa County organization and made 16 fleece blankets, they sewed two quilt tops and learned to hand bind a quilt, hand tie a quilt and even learned to crochet! What a blast.

Lessons Never Learned...

As I was told long ago, free is never really free. I am sure most of you have had this experience, too! Most likely with a pet as a child, trying to talk your parents into letting you keep the cute cuddly little thing. Or, maybe you have had this experience as an adult when you just could not say that one syllable word to your child who brought home the said pet and looked deeply into your soul with her/ his deep brown eyes! First the shots, the vet visits, the early morning... you know the routine, free is never really free.

For me, there was nothing cute about the creature we let into our house. I even had to talk my husband into the deal! Ugly? Yes. Comfortable? Definitely. Here is an image before the makeover, but the price was right.

Now, I never had reupholstered before, but thought what could be so hard, just a bit of sweat equity and I would have a lovely couch for watching movies and video game playing with the family. This said couch, first came into our garage this summer. Needless to say, it is now winter, the snow has finally fallen and the garage was really needed for the cars... so my lovely free find needed serious work and fast. Here is the finished addition to our home! Reupholstering was not too bad, and I used fabric that I already had in my stash. So, although I have yet to learn, free is not really free... I love the couch... and my skirts will match!

Sand Paper Prints!

Sand Paper Printing- this is a great way to understand the printing process and most prints look great! It is accessible for all age levels. My daughters love to make these! This is a wonderful activity for rainy days.

A sandpaper print is a monoprint! This means you can only make 1 copy of your plate. You might be able to make a ghost (a 2nd print) from the same sandpaper, but this is unlikely. There are many printmaking terms you can use while discussing this project. Here are a few- the printing plate: this is the sandpaper. Inking your plate: this is adding wax crayon to your sandpaper. Image transfer: this is the process of using heat to transfer your image.

Materials:

::Wax crayons- crayola or rose art work just fine

::Sandpaper- a variety of grit is always fun to experiment with, this particular example was on 120.

::Paper - this is to print on and can be white or colorful

::Iron- I use my studio iron, if you know you will be ironing your lovely linen tablecloth after this project, make sure you clean your iron!

The Process:
Cut your sandpaper to the desired size- 4 x 5 is a nice size to play with.

Using your crayons and a lot of pressure, color your design on the sandpaper.

Once you are sure you have finished, get ready to transfer your image! Place the sandpaper facing up, place your paper on top and iron! I like my iron on the hottest setting. You will see the crayon seep through your paper.

Once finished, admire your print!

It is a beautiful Tuesday morning- something that feels much more like spring than winter in Michigan. I am working to finish my UFO's from years past. Birute, the Patron Saint of Rawa Kuno will join her sisters Jane, the Patron Saint of Gombe and Dian, the Patron Saint of Virunga. She needed my attention and finally, I have taken the much needed time to complete her. I will add a picture very soon!

One New Years Resolution this year is to add fun art projects for you to try at home! These can be as sophisticated as you would like them to be. The first in this series will be posted later this week!

2011 was a whirlwind for myself and Maisel Studio. Last year at this time I was relishing the news of an addition to our family, hopefully arriving in August. Gabriel came much sooner. His sudden arrival and quick departure changed my family and my artwork. Much of my work focused on this loss, my depression and my families mourning. As 2011 ended, I delivered artwork for the show FOUR in Somerset, Kentucky. With the help of my dad, I came up with a new framing technique that leaves me giddy with excitement at the idea of what new pieces will bring. 2011 also ended with our seemingly ritual trip to the Emergency Room as Sophia shattered her arm at the skating ring.

As 2012 starts, I think of all the mending my family is doing this winter. I am hopeful for the year ahead and the future life will bring. May 2012 bring all of you comfort, wisdom and peace!

Ring, Ring, Ring the phone rang a high and low pitchedtone. “I’ll get it,” I yelledreaching out my sweaty hand grabbing the phone hoping and hoping it was thecall that I was waiting for.

“Hello, this is the Maisel family, may I ask whosespeaking?” I asked. “This is your dad and if you want tosee the baby you better come NOW!” My dad yelled. I have neverheard my dad talk like that, ever. He was talking way to fast for me and probably also for him.

“Who was that?” My Grandma asked me with my younger sisterSophia curled under her favorite blue and maroon blanket only half awake. “Baby… now… or… late!” The words stumbled out of a my mouthlike jelly beans jumping out of a bag. I was about to repeat it without stumbling words coming out, but sheseemed to understand.

“Girls grab some entertainment and we will be off!” myGrandma yelled as I went running to my room at top speed. I wish I cleaned my room as I lookedunder and through dirty clothes, clean clothes and sheets. Finally I found my book and my NintendoDS. In my head I felt dizzy,scared and speechless. Zipping outof my bedroom, stumbling on all the stairs, I ran our the front door and wewere off.

I wish we were there. It was too dark to read and my DS just shut down on me. Finally, we arrive. I could see bright lights in thebuilding. My grandma parked thecar. We all went in.

“Next,” yelled a tall, slim police officer, “Phone numberand email please.”

“How does the police officer look?” Sophia asked trying tolook over the railing but still not being able, I pick her up. “Oh, thanks Fiona!”

“This way girls, I think. This is the way to this room, right?” My Grandma asked a small lady withshoulder length chestnut hair.

“Here, let me show you.” We walked to the door and recognized it at once. The post card with a dewdrop and amaple leaf floating on the water was still taped to the door. Sophia knocked.

“Come in.” Iheard a familiar voice say. Mylegs became stiff, the door opened, I looked inside and saw my mom, dad andbaby brother Ganriel. I knew thiswould be the first time, the last time and the only time I would ever see him.

What is Art?

The hustle and bustle of Art Prize has come to an end. Today, I took down the pieces and returned them to my studio. Conversations about art will fade into the background until this incredible event takes place again next year.

I like Art Prize in Grand Rapids. I enjoy seeing all the work people are creating. Some of it amazing, some of it ridiculously awful. I find the conversations revolving around the work fascinating. My favorite question that is continuously asked and often unanswered is "What is Art?" or "Is that Art?" Debates ensue.

For me, art is many things. Art is an expression, a creative thought, an outpouring of material. Art is amazing craftsmanship or none at all. Art can be an idea and it can also be a reality. Its lack of definition makes art so intriguing.

I enjoy seeing artwork, touching artwork and being around artwork. I like to let the work talk to me. I enjoy reading more about the artist and what they were thinking. I like to compare their thoughts with my response.

I enjoy making my own artwork too. In my own work the combination of idea and craftsmanship are very important. I often use my work to discuss ideas that I am having or experiences that are overwhelming.

Now that ArtPrize 2011 has come to an end, it is time to focus once again on my life and the making of my work. What is art to you?

When No Words Seem Appropriate

I am enjoying the process of working on this piece. Although difficult in subject matter for me, the process is exciting. I have found a method which allows me to merge many creative loves: sewing, painting, drawing, collage. Although I have used this process in the past, I have always stretched the finished product over stretcher bars. This time I will grommet the piece and see if I like the results. It even has a title now: When No Words Seem Appropriate. Art prize is right around the corner- and I am working diligently to get this piece finished. I have always enjoyed deadlines! This piece will also be part of a solo show in October / November: Gabriel's Garden.

Well, I can honestly say I had not considered the difficulty I would have in composing and completing art pieces which discuss Gabriel. The deadline for this piece is quickly approaching. It needs installed on Monday, September 19th for Art Prize which begins on Sept. 21! As you can see there are many things to do before that will happen. Nevertheless, here are some more progress pieces. I am in the process of painting the flowers. I still have more objects to paint before I can start cutting and compiling. Enjoy!

Pressure, Deadlines and Work- the balancing act.

Often I am asked how I manage it all- owning a business and working as a freelance artist, being a mother of two, having a committed relationship and volunteering in the community. In all honesty, I think it is by letting go, making lists, and prioritizing time.

My house is a perfect example. I let it go so I can paint and sew in the studio, play soccer with the kids and go to the beach as a family. The dishes tend to be at the bottom of the list. The bathrooms- well lets just say, should you visit unexpectedly make sure your tetanus shots are in order! Luckily, this method tends to work and my family is okay with it. Once a week its a quick pick up and once a month we try to actually clean. This gives me time to do other things that I find more important- like hours to work in the studio!

I learned this strategy in college during a semester in London. I call it productive procrastination. I used to be the type of person that worked on a project until it was done. Even when I was burnt out I would stay put, willing myself to finish. My dad called it sharpening pencils because I would often sharpen my pencils again and again in an effort to possibly get my brain moving. This approach meant many wasted hours. I learned when pencil sharpening started to occur, it was time to change activities!

Now, I make lists and order them based on time required and date said project is due. When I am burning out on one project I can switch to another. When it is household stuff, I prioritize it based on what is more important. Do the dishes really need cleaned right now or would rollerblading around the block with the kids be better. (I choose the kids every time!) It seems to work. I get projects done and can balance multiple deadlines much more effectively. The house is messier than I would like, but I have time for everyone including me.

Depression

This self portrait is one of the first pieces I created since Gabriel's death. It is titled Depression. I combined the traditional quilt pattern depression with the weed imagery of the bind weed. Together they signify the difficulty of moving forward when one's heart is broken. On my shirt is a kidney design representing Gabriel's lack of kidneys. This piece is approximately 3 ft square.

Exploring the galleries in Santa Fe this week and loving it. Jane Sauer holds some wonderful fiber pieces. Giacobbe Fritz Contemporary has some of my favorite Encaustic paintings. But the gem of all galleries for me this week has been the Turner Carroll Gallery where I saw some of Hung Liu's work. Every day has been an adventure. This trip has been worthwhile on so many levels!

Gabriel's Birth Story

Birthing a child is a magical experience, one I have been fortunate enough to have three times. There is a power and sense of strength which surrounds giving birth. I call on all the women in the world who are birthing with me for peace and strength as I rally through wave after wave of contractions. The excitement of meeting my child is all encompassing, this helps dull the pain.

I am a strong proponent of natural birth. I remember reading Ina Mae's book Spiritual Midwifery in college and again during Peace Corps. The positive birth stories were empowering. My birth choice would be natural. I used midwifery services for all of my births. My first two children were born in birthing centers naturally. My third child, Gabriel would be born in the hospital with the use of an epidural.

For Gabriel's birth, sorrow was lurking. I knew the emotional pain after the birth would be quite heavy. I decided to limit the physical pain during childbirth. I was drawing on the strength from all the other mothers in the world who would be welcoming an angel. I hoped Gabriel would live for a while, but most children without kidneys (Potter's Syndrome) die in utero.

Sebastian and I welcomed our son Gabriel into the world at 10:22pm on April 15, 2011. We showered him with love. He met his sisters and one of his Grandmothers. He met a very good friend of mine and our pastor. The room was filled with joy and peace. Gabriel said goodbye to us at 11:55pm. I will cherish my memories of Gabriel's life.

My artwork is already changing in response to where I am emotionally right now. I will post images soon.

Monday thru Friday from 10 am until noon you will draw from observation using pencils, ink and oil pastels. You will do fast sketches and more in depth studies expanding your understanding of drawing principles using both contour and hatched lines.

Monday is OIL PASTEL.
Tuesday is ACRYLIC PAINT.
Wednesday is PRINTMAKING.

At the moment I am in the middle of teaching Session 4, a six week art class. Each class meets weekly for one hour. I have three different classes right now. One class is with 4th and 5th graders. This session we have been focusing on drawing what we see. Here are images of their self portraits!

In the class of 1st and 3rd graders, we are focusing on drawing crowds. If there is a crowd, how much of each person do you really see? These pieces are still in progress. The kids are learning a lot with this project, as am I. For example, we should have used smaller paper! These pieces are 18 x 24 inches.

Last Thursday I participated in a Quilters Marathon at the Coopersville Farm Museum. I arrived at the museum around 9:45 in the morning, set up my sewing machine an met my team mates. At 10:00 each group (there were 7 total) was given a paper bag filled with the same assortment of fabrics. All the teams ran back to their stations and got to work designing and creating the quilt. Every 30 minutes each team would send one delegate to pick one more fat quarter of fabric. The delegate had 10 seconds to pick their favorite piece and return to the group. At 4:00 in the afternoon, the race ended. All the teams came together with their work to be judged. Our team came in first! Here is what we created.

Last year ArtPrize began. Art was everywhere. For 3 weeks art discussions were the norm- it was an mazing experience. The city wide art competition drew in thousands of artists from all over the world. Grand Rapids became a living art gallery.

This year I decided to participate in the art buzz. The excitement of finding a location large enough to house The Three Furies and installing the work is over. Now begins the constant humm of art conversation! This year over 1700 artists will be converging on Grand Rapids beginning September 22 and culminating with the awards event on October 10! It is worth the trip to experience the excitement of ArtPrize.

Rare Threads, Eclectic Meanderings

Last weekend I dropped off some work for the show "Rare Threads, Eclectic Meanderings." I also met the juror Sylvia Walworth and had the chance to see some of the incredible pieces which will be in the show. This juried show will be held at the Jordan River Arts Council building in East Jordan, Michigan. There is an opening reception Sunday, October 3, from 1- 4pm. The show then runs October 3 through November 12, 2010. There are also some incredible workshops offered during this time period. Check out the Jordan River Arts council website for more information.

The Kentucky Patch

In December, I painted this quilt patch (the Kentucky Patch) for my parents barn in Faubush, Kentucky. Many hands helped fill in the design. Here is an image of it mounted on the barn.

SUMMER ART CAMP

Each session students will create two projects based on artwork from artists in history. Each class block has a maximum of six students. All images shared in class will be age appropriate. Pick the time that works for you, mornings from 10:00 - 11:00 or afternoons from 1:00 - 2:00.

DATES:
June 14- 18: 10:00 - 11:00, 1:00 - 2:00
Pattern Painting: Bold is Beautiful. Using both line and color, we will explore the beauty of pattern, examining the artwork from aboriginal Australia as well as Pattern Painters like
Joyce Kozloff and quilter Jane Sassaman.

July 12 - 16: 10:00 - 11:00, 1:00 - 2:00
Mixed Media Madness. Looking at artwork by Audrey Flack and Daniel Kornrumpf, we will create a contour drawing and a still life which incorporates personal objects.

July 19 -23: 10:00 - 11:00, 1:00 - 2:00
Pattern and Perspective. Students will look at artwork by Nathan Heuer, Cheryl Molnar and Kehinde Wiley to create the illusion of space using shape, color, pattern and perspective.

July 26 - 30: 10:00 - 11:00, 1:00 - 2:00
Drawing and Printing: Its not all black and white. We will look at artwork by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Ghada Amer as we explore methods of line making used in art.

August 16 - 20: 10:00 - 11:00, 1:00 - 2:00
Color: How Complimentary of You! We will explore the use of color in art, creating projects based on the work
of Pop Artist Andy Warhol, and Op Artist Bridget Riley.

August 23 - 27: 10:00 - 11:00, 1:00 - 2:00
Self Portraits: After examining self portraits by famous artists in history, we will create our own using both paint and pencil.

SUMMER CAMP RATES: $75.00 per session (includes supplies).

Years ago, when my goal in life was to become a primatologist, I worked on a research project at Duke University studying the olfaction of the Brown Lemur. While there I met this guy, a Diademed Sifaka. He quickly became my favorite. Although not doing any research on him, I visited him most days. My recent work returns to my passion for primates. I will be speaking in Chicago Saturday, April 17th from 4:00 - 5:00 at The International Quilt Festival. I will have pieces available to see up close as well as provide a power point lecture discussing the topic of personal narratives and sewing in the lecture "Sew Personal: The Stitching of History." The Ironing Board Project

In the past, events like a quilting bee would bring women together to share ideas, confidences, needs and problems or to pass stories on from one generation to the next. The first month of teaching lessons from my studio is already over! How fast the time flies. Here are some examples of student work from the Kids 7-9 year old class. The focus of the session was Texture and Pattern. The students examined work by Paul Cezanne for this project.

Tips from the Studio

Sometimes I find that I have finished a piece in my mind before it is actually completed. This tends to become the"boring" phase of the project. To keep myself motivated to finish the piece, I listen to books on tape. I have never been able to put a good book down. By completing the more tedious aspects of art making while listening to a great story, I find myself unable to leave and the project seems to finish itself.

Postcard Salon

I love the Postcard Salon at the Muskegon Museum of Art. Every year I send a couple postcards to the fundraiser. Half of the proceeds from the card go to the museum, the other half to the artist. If you are in the area, check it out! The cards are available for viewing from January 28th - February 4th. Purchasing occurs on Feb 4th, between 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Meet Flippy

Sophia turned six not very long ago. Her birthday wish was a book and fabric for sewing fun things. She and I went together to the book store together and she picked the book Cute Dolls by Aranzi Aronzo and Anne Ishi. Then we went to the fabric shop and she used her gift card to buy fabric. Flippy the bunny was born today. Sophia cut and stitched him today on my sewing machine. Now Flippy is fast asleep in her arms! This is a memorable Mama Monday.

Marlis

This drawing of Marlis works in conjunction with that of Bernd. Marlis is also an architect who worked in city planning. She has lived in Worbis most of her life and whenever I visit, we have an incredible time. Worbis, a small town in the foothills of the Hartz Mountains, Germany, has many wonderful places to explore.

Pencil on paper, the piece is in progress. I commissioned myself to do this drawing/painting as a gift for Bernd and Marlis. The patterning which will continue to deveop is a map of the town in which Bernd was raised. As an adult he became an architect for city planning and helped his hometown develop into a beautiful village. If ever in Germany, visit Wunschendorf outside of Gera. Its worth a stroll through town and a visit to the Fairy Tale Forrest.

A breakthrough in the studio occurred after a good friend stopped in for a visit. Something in our conversation made me want to revisit the patterned pieces I had made earlier and push them further. These images show the results.

An unwelcome guest has been lingering at my house and has definitely effected my working hours: first Sophia, now Fiona and I am not feeling all that well either. I look forward to a healthy household once again- where Mama Mondays are filled with creativity, two giggling girls run through the house and life returns to normal.

The Next Pattern Painting

The next painting is underway and I am finally going to play around with the gold leaf which has been sitting in my studio for quite some time. Orientation of the piece is yet to be determined.

I started the project by painting over an old figure painting with primer and once dry began to work on the painting. The green line I had drawn needed to be crisper. Using masking tape on one side and painters tape on the other, I re-painted the green line. Gently, I pulled the masking tape off the painting with no issue. The line was looking good, now time to take off the painters tape- bad idea! The painters tape stripped the painting down to the figure.

My solution: Yes paste and Reeves heavyweight paper. I continued painting and completed the piece.

The First Trimester: Fertility Quilt

I started this project with the intention of making a small wall hanging based on the mixed media piece Burning Bush. Once 16 of the pieces were created, I realized this would look better very large. My pattern underneath gives a general idea of the finished quilt.The Fertility Quilt is growing steadily - I will keep the updates coming!

Mama Mondays

Mama Mondays are the day that my youngest daughter and I work in my studio together. She does not go to school that day and this allows us the opportunity to enjoy the creative process and complete some of our own projects. This past Monday, Sophia and I made hand puppets from felt for she and her sister's puppet theater. We completed Little Red Riding Hood, the Wolf and the Hunter. Next week we will finish the cast of characters.

Fall Cleaning

After finishing my artwork for the solo show Weeds in Byron Center, Michigan, my studio was trashed and in need of a spring cleaning. Summer passed without much change in the studio. Travel plans to Europe, the Middle East and parts of the USA encouraged my imagination and revived my inspiration but did not magically clean the studio. Now back in Allendale and ready to work, the first project tackled - the studio is clean.

Harrison Knob Artist Residency

What a week at Harrison Knob! (July 27 - August 2) Susan Mulder, Sue Burkett, Andrea Eckert and I all spent the week creating artwork, discussing ideas and exploring the countryside. The week culminated with the art show WET at Riverstone Gallery in Somerset, Kentucky.
